Music, rhythm and brain health

When my mom was in early dementia, my friend Conrad, who taught yoga, suggested breathing practices - but I didn't live near enough to help her implement something new ...

Sound healer Jonathan Goldman suggests humming for ~ 5 minutes each day, while Jim Donovan bespeaks studies showing meditation or chanting a mantra (Sa Ta Na Ma) with accompanying mudra (hand positions) benefits the brain and slows the onsert of degeneration.  I now do Wim Hof's breathing exercises several times a week, and have several singing practices.

In the 90s, I took 'How Music Heals' as part of Laurie Riley's Music for Healing and Transition certification program. We learned how music can reduce pain, lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, stabilize the heart rate, promote well being and enhance the memory.  Music benefits both the performers and listeners!

Mental Health

I was intrigued by studies showing familiar music, esp. That from our younger years, helps place folks in time and aids memory. In contrast, less familiar and arrhythmic music is best when playing for someone in their last days (Thanatology), and that with a steady rhythm can stabilize the heart.

My dad played piano and sang old favorites most evenings, and we often played and sang together throughout my youth and childhood.  We noticed a decline in my mom's memory after his passing, and more clarity after music events at her Spayed Living! She enjoyed music, but didn't sing or play herself, so lost the benefit of those daily tunes. I love being invited to play harp at care facilities and events!

Physical Benefits

At a folk harp retreat in the mid 90s, harper Ron Price, who had a debilitating neurological disorder, told us that his symptoms abated when he played an hour each day, but began to return when he skipped several days - the harp sits against the chest and stimulates the thymus gland. Ron had begin taking small therapy harps into care facilities, so patients could play themselves, and receive more benefits.

If you sing, play an instrument, or have a mindfulness practice, you're already ahead of the game! If your practice is more sporadic, consider adding 15-30 minutes a day for a week, and see how you feel!

Do you incorporate music and or breathwork in your weekly activities?

Grand Opening

Our local aviation and space museum complex has been purchased by the Falls Event Centers, and I will be playing a selection of harp music for the Grand Opening of this new business Wed. March 29.

Rowan Luchair
My offering will be a blend of traditional Celtic and original music, both my own and from favorite NW Harpers including Sharon Thormahlen, Harper Tasche, and Beth Kolle.

On Spring Equinox I was invited into the gradeschool my
With Tuille at my IC art class
grandkids attended to play harp as a background for their painting project! I love seeing the kids' response to live music, and finding out how many of them play an instrument. Art and music are a natural combo!

And if you'd like to hear me play, but aren't local, you might enjoy this interview with Howie Harkema for our local cable channel

Happy Harping!

March & St Pat's At Bistro Maison

March has come, & again I'll be playing harp at Bistro Maison, a lovely French restaurant on 3rd Street in McMinnville - or, as the Wiki entry states: The precise Gaelic term for the' harp of the Gael' is clàrsach Ghàidhealach (Sc.)/cláirseach Ghaelach (Ir.), meaning Gaelic harp)

I'll be there for both Lunch & Dinner on Saint Patrick's Day lunch, Thursday March 17th. I've done this several years running, it's
a popular event, so make your reservations! This is a lovely setting with great food, & harp - what's not to like?

Most of the tunes will be Irish, with a smattering of other Celtic pieces. & my harp, Rowan Luchair, is modeled on a lowhead Irish harp , in her luthier Rick Kemper's words: "Top players from Ireland & Scotland seem to prefer small harps with lighter tension that can respond to the blazing ornamentation they put into their music. Luchair (Gaelic for 'joy' or 'delight') incorporates the best features of these harps."

A young dancing friend is working on learing the Gaelic, & asks me 'how are you' -
Conas tá; tú? (co-nas tah tu) . . . . to which I can reply 'Tá mé go hiontach" (tah-may go hee-un-tachk) - I'm wonderful! or "Tá mé go maith" (tah may go mah) - I'm well!

So -
Ar mhaith leat lón? (air why lyat lahn) - 'would you like lunch?' Come to Bistro Maison!

Who's On Third??

Are you looking for something special to do on Labor Day Weekend? Come to downtown McMinnville for a taste of Oregon’s Favorite Main Street at “Who’s on Third?” Enjoy the last weekend of summer tasting local wines, exploring a variety of shops, and dining at one of the many superb restaurants downtown.

Choose from a a delightful variety of international cuisines including French, Italian, Spanish Tapas, and Japanese. There are several Wine tasting rooms scattered throughout town, so if you've wanted to sample wines from our great local vineyards, this is an excellent opportunity. & it's an easy stroll to the Saturday Market, located in the Granary District between 5th & 8th Streets.

In addition to food and drink, downtown merchants will be offering special Who’s on Third? sales and promotions. A stroll along Oregon’s Favorite Main Street on Saturday, September 4 or Sunday, September 5 will also feature local musicians and performers.

Ah - musicians & performers you ask?? YES indeed, Rowan & I will be out 'harping on Third Street' on Saturday, from 12-2! So if you're out & about, please stop by! & if you have a song you'd like to hear, I'm happy to have requests :)

Last year 'Who's On Third?' was held in July, in place of Turkey Rama; I'm happy that we have another summer festival. Who's On Third? is scheduled to coincide with the Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon. Come on out & enjoy the festivities!

Who's on Third??

What a treat harping on the street! I borrowed my friend Dennis' Crate Taxi amp, & Rowan & I spent a couple of delightful hours playing tunes & sharing smiles.

Today I was pleased to find that the photo a News Register photographer (Marcus Larson) snapped yesterday made the FRONT PAGE of the paper!! (to see the photo & caption, scroll thru the photos at the top of the page, mine is the 3rd of 5)

This was our first year playing for the festival - I hope to play a couple of days for next year's event. A double bike trailer/stoller made transporting Rowan, the music & amp a joy (& no worries about parking!)

Harping This Week

Just a reminder that I'll be 'out & about' playing harp on Third Street in the 500 block during McMinnville's popular 'Who's on Third??' event - stroll down Third Street, see old friends & vendors (150 booths) and choose from an array of festival food.

Last year, the name changed from "Turkey Rama" & the focus shifted from increasingly trite & commercial to promoting local businesses, artists & musicians.
Other events around Oregon inc: the Salem Art Fair, the Lavendar Festival, with lavender farms around Yamhill County open to guests & artists in the fields doing 'plein aire' drawings/paintings, the Sisters Quilt Show, & the Oregon Country Faire down Veneta way! Lots to choose from!

'Who's on Third?' Nadya & Rowan - Friday July 10: 1:30-3:30 in the 500 block (on Third Street)

Three down, . . .

Had a lovely time harping around yesterday & today! I wore the green ribbon wreath again, & was pleased that a couple of folks at the more formal Oregon Mutual (Insurance) gig commented on what a nice touch that was!
One of the managers made the very common (but welcome) observation on what lovely background music the harp offers - "It was a nice undercurrent, & I noticed its absence when you stopped playing!" I'll go back Wed to offer lunchtime music in the lobby. Last year I was upstairs, by a railing, so you could hear the harp as you entered the building.

Today I was set up at the gallery & frame shop where I get my 8 x 5" mattboard for my SoulCollage card. There was lots of activity downtown, with carriage rides & many businesses offering holiday music, but not as much traffic in our block - boo! Some friends came down specifically to hear me, which was so sweet, & I met some new friends.

Then over to Hillside, where I was by the fireplace - not lit, but more festive than my usual corner - & folks seemed to talk less. I love 'wallpaper gigs' for the reason stated by the fellow yesterday - it isn't too loud to talk, & it adds such a nice touch. But it's also nice to have more of an audience, & some of the seniors get a bit upset when they can't hear me.
The refreshments were set up in another area, around the corner, by the Christmas tree. So folks down there hadn't heard me, & they asked me to bring the harp over!  A fellow (visiting his mom from out of state) said "I want to dance with mom (90 something!) & I need music - how can I help you?" I had him carry my bench & music, & played a bit longer! He danced with a dear friend (one of the spunkiest 86 year olds in town!) & moved his mom's wheel chair closer to me - she proceeded to 'dance' her feet, & talking to an unseen partner! So precious.

Santa said 'So we meet again! We've been doing this five years now - & you are doing the same thing I am, bringing people happiness!!'
Wow! Jolly old elf & elvin harper . . .

Hoping the predicted snow holds off & I'm able to get out to the golf course Sunday afternoon! Monday's lunchen has been cancelled to avoid weather worries.
